“Comes COYOTE!”:  A Reliquary © 2007
26x 20” mixed media

When coyote comes calling, we all fall down…into the dirt our pride hurt, coyote teaches us to get up
wipe off our noses and lick our wounds an continue our trek through unknown lands. The fool, the
trickster, Coyote, the god dog lives, dies, and lives again. Poisoned, shot, trapped, off she trots
laughing in our face---she never goes away. When we least expect it, coyote trips us up, snaps at our
ankle and makes us pay attention and laugh at life. Deathbringer, dawnsinger, howling moon dog of
the soul, she trots over us making tracks, tracks, tracks---until we get it right---only to return again to
challenge our thinking…

"Into The Wicked, Wild: An Illuminated Fairy Tale” © 2007
18x 24” mixed media

“Entering the dark forest the hero’s adventure begins…” Fairy tales reveal truths and wisdom
wrapped in color and imagination. When the call to adventure is heard like an owl in the dark,
everyone must journey into the dark forest to meet their wolf and do battle to find their
strength and gifts. To fell the forest, kill the wolf, or abort the journey---is life without
adventure---life without meaning---and certain death. But to journey into the dark tangles,
know the wolf, and stand your ground---is the prize.

"Ripples" © 2007
20x 25" mixed media

This watercolor, mixed media, was inspired from our own backyard pond. I watched at least 7
species of Dragonflies deposit eggs last summer. The "Ripples" story begins with: the bee,
pollinating the lily, disturbed takes flight, swept away by the dragonfly. Wild geese fly, snake
freezes, frogs wait to dive, heron prepares to strike---an exciting story of life and
balance---drama!.

"May’s Awakening" © 2007
18x 26" miixed media

This revisited spring mixed media piece that was inspired from my original, “Awakening”,
comes from the dance of life seen in the northern forests. The words and writing of
American naturalist, Susan Fennimore Cooper, are wrapped around the mat and upon the
birches. "Behold Life", the beauty of life in balance, and the winding trail of seeds fills the
forest with hope, new growth---new life.

"WILDERNESS...Preservation of the World"
20x 24" mixed media

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Artist-in-Residence. Original
donated to the
"Friends of the Porkies", Ontonogan, MI.

This mixed media piece tells the tale of preservation of wilderness and
Thoreau's quote on wildness. Layers of life, flora and fauna, predator and
prey, are held in balance. Lake Superior crashes, rivers run, mountains
crumble, falcons take flight---freedom, wildness---ever moving, ever
changing. Layer upon layer life goes on, and the human hand holds reaches
out to grasp these moments of wildness.

LAKE of power mood and music, home of
sturgeon and loon, let me not forget your
ancient SONG. Lake Michigan has always
been a healing balm. The drumming of her
waters sing to the soul.
“when the waters are calm and the fog
rises now and again, i, the spirit of the
lake,  will appear...”

"The fierce Kabibinoka had his dwelling among the icebergs, in the
ever-lasting snowdrifts, in the kingdom of Wabasso...to the lodge came
wild and wailing heaped the snow in drifts about and his hair with snow
besprinkled streamed behind him like a river like a black and wintry
river as he howled and hurried southward over frozen lakes and
moorlands."

BESTIARY
collection

A collection of experience in the outdoor life of Michigan…of habitats from
woodland and wetland, to backyard and field.

“The Bestiary, or collection of notes on the habits of certain animals, was a
familiar type of medieval literature, surviving even into the Renaissance. The
writer usually attempted to draw some moral conclusion from his observation of
animal life---which were not always first- hand, so that from the naturalist point
of view the information is far from reliable.

Many modern animal superstitions can be traced to such writings ex: bulls being
infuriated by the color red. Leonardo da Vinci amused himself in his old age by
composing a bestiary, never translated into English, it is almost unknown in
Italy.”
